 Wyong Triumph in Junior Pennants

Wyong Golf Club has won the 2012 District Junior Pennant, with an astonishing win against the hot favorites' Toukley. The team of Zac Churcher, Brent Dowling, Chris Gray Jnr, Jordie Garner, Brodie Hart and Jake Slade beat the current holders 3 to 2 in the final.

At the start of the pennant series it always looked like being a Wyong /Toukley final.  With Toukley having beaten us in the previous two years another gripping series was in store for us.  During the round robin series both Wyong and Toukley were stamping their superiority with convincing wins against the other clubs.  The last round the two heavy weights met, with Toukley crushing Wyong 5- 0 convincingly.  (The trap was set!).

Toukley‘s players were well credentialed and lower handicapped, but I knew we could beat them for we had the better team spirit and a “game plan”.  A players bonding session at our club a few days before the final reinforced our belief that we could beat them in the final.

The final was dramatic day with Toukley maybe a little too confident and our players PRIMED for a big one.  It was important that our team got off to an early lead which Brodie Hart and Jake Slade did, after 9 holes these two players were well on their way to win their matches.  We needed 1 other win??? Toukley’s strength was in their top 3 players who 2 weeks earlier had smashed us. Chris Gray and Brent Dowling were not playing a lot of golf these days and the opposition were strong.  Zac Churcher was in good form, but was up against probably the number one junior on the coast.

Playing the round of his life Chris Gray Jnr was successful against an opponent that had beaten him 6 and 4 two weeks earlier.  With a silky smooth swing in place and an opponent under stress Chris won 4 and 3.There was great celebration on the 15th of Everglades as parents and officials of Wyong celebrated the win.

A special mention to our Club President Ian, Club Captain Craig and Club Professional Mitch for their support who were there to witness a fabulous win by a great team of young Wyong golfers.

CENTRAL COAST JUNIOR PENANTS 2011

Being defending Champions and winning the pennant three out of the last four years a lot is expected from our junior sides and what a great start our young side has had.

After the progression of many of juniors to the colts rank, we are going through a rebuilding phase. With an average age of fifteen, our young guns are going extremely well and this is surely a testament to the junior program we have within the club.

A first up win (5-0) against a strong Everglades side was very exciting with most matches going to the 17th. Zac Churcher and Chris Gray having particularly strong wins.

Round two against Gosford produced a 4-1 win, with only Mat Kyle going down. Matt will only be the better, after gaining valuable match play experience. Adam Barnes, Brent Dowling, Zac Churcher and Chris Gray all had good wins in difficult conditions.

Round three against Terrigal saw another good win 5-0. Youngsters Will Allison and Jordie Garner played way above their weight for solid wins. Zac Churcher and Chris Gray smashed their opponents. The best match involved Brent Dowling who displayed his tenacious nature to beat his opponent at the 17th.

 2009 CCDGA JUNIOR PENNANTS

Wyong Juniors clinched the 2009 CCDGA Junior Pennant  with a 5 to Nil win over Terrigal at Everglades on Sunday.

Captain Alex Pitty lead the way with a convincing early 8 & 6 win. Dean Smith & Corey Dowling followed shortly after both with 7 & 6 wins and then Justin McPhan held out a late challenge to finally win his match 5&4. Fifth player of the day Adam Barnes missed a game this week as Terrigal were unable to field a full team on the day and so the Wyong team picked up a 5 nil win. (Missing from the winning team photo is Jack North)

Wyong now have had a successful 3 years at junior pennants winning in 2007, runner-up in 2008 and winners again in 2009. congratulations to all the team and thank you to 2009 team manager Leon Du Chateau for your assistance this year.

JUNIOR PENNANT TITLE INSIGHT

Week 4 v Toukley at Gosford

In what was to be our most important match in our quest for the Pennant title the team of  Alex Pitty, Cory Dowling, Dean Smith, Justin McPhan and Jack North  shutout  the their highly fancied Toukley opponents, to win  5-0.

Once again Captain Alex Piity led from the front, displaying much tenacity to overcome his opponent on the 18th hole.

Corey Dowling fought back from a disastrous start where he pulled, chopped and shanked shoots all over the place.  To Corey’s credit he gained his composer to play some OUTSTANDING golf to beat his more fancied opponent .Great come back Corey….

JustanMcphan and Jack North were never in trouble comfortably beating their opponents.

Dean Smith had his opponent dormey 2, at one stage only to see the match continue to the 20th hole where a 15ft putt for birdie finally ended a great day’s golf.

Due to not all clubs fielding a junior side and bye’s, our next game is some 5 weeks away where we take on an inexperienced Terrigal side. A win there will see us go through the series undefeated and be Pennant title holders for 2009.

Wyong Juniors Triumphant.

After three rounds of Junior Pennants our team remain undefeated.

Round 3 –Wyong v Everglades at Toukley     Win 4-1

Captain Alex Pitty suffered a rare loss today, but we all know this will only spur him on to better things next week.

Dean Smith and Justin McPhan controlled their matches from the very first hole to run out winners 4/3 and 3/1 respectiveably.

Jack North after last week’s heroics comfortably beat his opponent 7/6. Jack who is never short of confidence seems to be hitting the ball better ever game, after not playing a lot of golf in the last six months.

Although,Brent Dowling showed his never say die attitude to be narrowly defeated on the 16th.  Wyong were given the win after a technical breach of the Conditions of Play by  Everglades officials.

Next weeks game against Toukley could well determine the Pennant shield for 2009.

Keep up the good work boys………

First up win for Junior Pennant’s

Wyong took on a very strong Gosford side at Tuggerah coming away with a 4-1 win.
It was a solid hit-out for all boys, with most matches being decided on the 18th.

Alex Pitty, after being down early, discovered his form on the back 9 to beat his opponent 2 up as did Corey Dowling. Corey saved his best shot for the last hole in front of a jubilant clubhouse crowd almost slam dunking a wedge into the hole for a tap in birdie. “Great shot Corey”.

Dean Garner, having his first Pennant’s game for the club, overcame his opponent in a see-sawing struggle to win 3-2.

Justin Mcphan, completely overwhelmed his opponent 9-7 (a rather short round of golf for Justin today).

Dean Smith, was a surprise loser after being up most of the day, was beaten on the 18th. I can’t imagine this happening again as Dean’s form looked surprisingly good.

Bluff of the round, must go to young Dean Garner who told his opponent he was off a much lesser handicap before teeing off. After hearing his correct handicap after the match, his opponent admitted he was a little overawed when he first heard of Dean’s handicap on the first tee.

2008 Runners up in the CCDGA Junior Pennant:

In a tight match that went down to the wire the Everglades team finished in front with a 3 to 2& ½ match result. An encouraging but disappointing result after an undefeated lead up to the fina,l only to be beaten by a better team on the day. Look out in 2009 Wyong will be up there in the finals again with more finals experience under our belt.
